This week I am showcasing Julie Andrews. I mentioned her previously in “Movie of the Week: The Sound Of Music” and I have to reiterate what a fantastic actress she is. I find her so elegant and mesmerizing. So today I recommend both an oldie that is a classic and a more recent movie that I have added to my children’s favorite vault.

Mary Poppins is a story about a nanny that changes an entire family’s life. Julie Andrews plays Mary Poppins and she comes off as both annoyingly all knowing and “practically perfect in every way”. This movie is filled with catchy tune, great dancing, and animation and magic that will captivate even the youngest viewers. If you have not yet shared this with your children I highly recommend doing so soon.

The second recommendation is a newer movie and, although suitable for all ages, will be greatly appreciated by somewhat older girls. The Princess Diaries follows Mia Thermopolis (Ann Hathaway) as she finds out she is the future queen of Genovia. We watch her as her princess lessons transform her from an awkward teenager to a beautiful, composed princess. This movie has it all, romance, humor and Mandy Moore singing. It also has a great lesson, that a person’s greatness comes from within and that by judging on the outside you may miss something great. It also teaches girls to be confident and strong and stand up for something they believe in. I am a sucker for romantic princess movies and so I highly suggest you check this out.

I saw this movie recently with my two kids and they both sat enthralled. My only regret is not having read them the story before hand. It was a little hard to follow all the whimsical chracters without having heard them before.

This movie was fun for the whole family. The characters are lovable and the animation is a joy to watch. So take the whole family and check it out.

For another fun Dr. Seuss classic check out “The Cat and the Hat” movie. This movie is geared towards slightly older children but still fun to watch a classic story come to life.

Both of these movies combine animation with real people for an adventure that is out of this world. I think that growing up I was one of very few of my friends who would call these favorites. Most people I know say movies like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid…but these two movies both deserve just as much recognition.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks stars Angela Lansbury as a witch who must care for three sibling orphans in London during World War 2. The siblings soon discover her secret and together they embark on an adventure to help the allies and save England. All travel takes place on a bed with a bedknob that controls it.

I love the scene when the clothing scares off the army even though they are not really people. To see pajamas prancing around is priceless.

I highly recommend sharing this Fabulous Classic with your kids today.

Pete’s Dragon is another Disney classic. It is about a boy and his dragon friend. Pete has only one friend in the world and that’s Elliot (the dragon). They run away and are taken in by a kind lighthouse keeper and her father. Elliot loves mischief and pranks and it soon gets him in a lot of trouble. When he is captured by a crooked salesman it is up to Pete to save him.

The songs in this movie are endearing and the playfulness between boy and cartoon dragon are adorable.

Although many people found this movie uninteresting, I happened to love it as a kid and I think most young kids will…though parents may be some what bored.

This week’s movie of the week is a natural progression from the last. However, although I recommend “The Sound of Music” for everyone, I suggest using caution when showing “The Wizard of Oz” to very young children. The witch can be scary and the flying monkeys gave my friend the creeps. Yet, if your children are old enough or that then this movie is a classic and a must see!

I think because this was one of my mother’s all time favorite movies, my sibling and I grew up watching it. It teaches the classic lesson that we all possess great things inside us if we just can bring it out. The music is fantastic and the scenes are absolutely Fabulous. Judy Garland is an amazing actress and the rest of the characters are sure to become some of your children’s favorites as the years go on. So rent it today at Netflix.com or buy this classic.

Therefore, this week’s movie suggestion is of course “The Sound of Music“. There is romance and suspense; and of course the music is the best part.Kids will be singing along and singing the songs for days to come. There is nothing better then a movie that can span generations and be loved by all. I highly recommend buying or renting this classic today!

“Enchanted ” is a new release on Netflix.com but in my home it is already a favorite. We have it already and my kids ask to watch it everyday. They love the singing and the cartoons, but they also get a kick out of her becoming real and going around New York (especially my son who recognizes some of the places as places where he lives.)

“Enchanted ” is the story of a girl named Giselle who falls in love with a prince. However, before they can get married Prince Edward’s step-mother pushes her down a waterfall and into real life so that she will not get married and become queen. The rest of the movie follows her in NY, the prince trying to save her and the step-mother trying to stop them. I love this movie so much that I don’t want to give anything else away because I think everyone will love it too. (My favorite part is when they sing in real life because they are so used to cartoon world living). The cast in this movie is phenomenal and will attract parents to the movie as well. Characters are played by Amy Adam,Patrick Dempsey, Susan Sarandon and James Marsden.

This movie is really fun for the whole family. Although it appears to be for older kids my three year old can be caught singing the songs while playing and my one year old sits so intently to watch it.

I hope you all like it as much as we do and that it makes it to your favorite list as well.

“The Brave Little Toaster” is a movie about bravery and friendship. When five appliances (a toaster, vacuum cleaner, electric blanket, radio and bedside lamp) find themselves discarded they begin feeling dumped. So they set off to the big city to find their owner. Along the way the encounter many obstacles, even ending up in a garbage dump. Through the characters perseverance children will learn about never giving up, the power of working together and how strong the power of love can be.

I really loved this movie and the ending leaves everyone with a great feeling. This movie is great for children of all ages and adults will find both the characters and storyline amusing. I hope that you all enjoy it as much as I always have.

For those who never saw the Parent Trap, it’s about two strangers who meet and discover that they are really twins separated at birth. Just like the original, the remake is filmed in split screen with Lindsey playing both characters (instead of using twins).

The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a beautiful movie based on the book. I loved this book growing up and Disney has done a phenomenal job of bringing it to life. Everything about this is just so well done from the music and characters to the fantasy effects and scenery. It really is a joy to watch, especially if you loved the books. It is sure to be a hit with your child as well.

For those who don’t know what this movie is about here is a brief description:

The movie follows the four Pevensie children, Lucy, Peter, Edmund, and Susan, and their adventures in the mystical world of Narnia. When they are sent to the British countryside for their own safety during the blitz of World War II, they discover an old wardrobe is an entryway into a mystical world . Narnia is filled with mystical creatures suffering under the hundred-year rule of the cruel White Witch. The arrival of the children gives the creatures of Narnia hope for liberation, and all are dragged into the inevitable conflict between evil (the Witch) and good (Aslan the Lion.)

My first movie recommendation is of course “Finding Nemo”. I chose this one because it is one of my favorite cartoons and my kids LOVE this movie. Avi always asks me to watch it. Whenever my sister is babysitting it is her go to movie as well. The jokes are funny and the characters are so lovably hilarious. Anyone who has not seen it I highly recommend it. I hope your family loves watching it together as much as we have.
